A very nice person I see a couple times each week is also a strong Trump supporter. I am not clear what motivates him to support Trump. But my point is that he is not unkind or a hater in his typical interactions with me and I assume others like me. So he must have allowed Trump to construct an alternative universe or vision, or perhaps a filter, that permits him to accept the anti-immigrant vitriol.
I don’t think Trump has turned 50% of US citizens into bad people. But he has found a way to turn off what author Doris Lessing called “Substance of We-Feeling” when considering immigrants, and liberals and Democrats,for that matter.
Your movement sounds like the one I walked into at age 15, with peace demonstrations, civil.rights actions, grape boycotts and the like, led often by spiritual people. Our world has hardened some, it feels, but it’s always been hard. I don’t know where it goes, but I continue to believe that it will start with protection of “immigrants,” some of whom have grandchildren here.
Is this the only way forward? make America great again but make it left? maybe I'm missing some sort of meta-communication strategy here... idk but this profoundly confused and contradictory premise of "american morality" does not advance or illuminate anyones understanding of history, nationalism, fascism, etc. Instead it just reinforces and repeats much of the logic that drove us here to this point. maybe this sort of watery stump speech rhetoric is the only way to build mass movements idk you'd know better than me but I really do hate it
sorry to double post but I just cannot get over the sandwich of semantice nihilism that is " a righteous path back to decency." followed by "I'm making no illusions" followed by 'the american revolution was the most radical blah blah blah" I just. I'm so tired.
