This edition features yet another podcast. History prof and journalist Suzi Weissman talks with yours truly and UCLA History Prof Emeritus Robert Brenner, an editor for New Left Review and Against the Current.
The three of us are friends and close political allies so you might be surprised by some of the (civil) disagreements that arise in analyzing where the Democrats are, where they are going and what differences it might make. It’s lively and fun.
As Prof. Weissman says in her description of the program: “The convention was historic in several ways: it was pro-union and featured the UAW International Union’s Shawn Fain, the speakers & delegates were diverse, younger and more openly progressive on issues that matter. It also appeared to unite the old neoliberal wing of the party with the left and the more radical base, emphasizing unity in the fight to protect the freedoms under attack – voting, gender, reproductive rights and more. But what does it all mean? Judging by the polls, candidates Harris-Walz successfully walked the delicate tightrope that is internal Democratic politics. Palestinian Americans were denied a chance to address the convention, and while Harris called for a ceasefire and nodded to the suffering in Gaza, she did not mention an arms embargo. The climate catastrophe was also acknowledged but little more. It was still an historic convention in multiple ways that we’ll touch on while looking at the race ahead.”
