The text below is not a transcript but rather offers the context of the pod.
I continue to withhold much comment on the DNC itself because there is already a massive surfeit of coverage out there and don’t want to create more clutter. I’ll have a few things to say when it’s over.
I am watching it. As conventions go, it’s very good (with a few flaws but so what).
My confidence as of today is very high that Harris will beat Trump and that it MAGA will lose the House and maybe the Senate (that’s too close to call right now).
But…but…Trump’s numbers, while not growing, are not moving much and seem to stick around 46%-47% which btw COULD be enough to win the electoral college if Harris does rack up a 3-4 point lead in the popular vote. I’m not being pessimistic, just describing the playing field.
What’s Trump’s strategy now? That’s the question I answer in this Nation podcast helmed by historian and writer Jon Wiener. I will forward this much: his snubbing of the middle and suburban voters is totally conscious. He’s fishing in the pool of the 80 million or more Americans that care little about politics and almost never vote. Oh, yeah, and they are white. Tune in. It’s a fun convo.
