Donald Trump himself has become the latest shiny object to distract us from the overall rot and collapse of the Trump regime. What I mean is that the view of many Democrats of all stripes and liberals, in particular, has become a lagging indicator of where we are really at. Trump is finished. Time to stop exerting all of one’s energy in useless crap like “hoping” he’s going to lose or, worse, staying up nights worried about a coup.
While, indeed, there is NO room for complacency, it is now as certain as possible that just over a hundred days remain before Donald Trump will be voted out of office. The only real suspense is by how great a margin and how many Senators will he take down with him.
Trump can do what he wants but it is too late to for him to change and it is too late for him to squelch the desperation that a vast majority of Americans feel as they fear encroaching Mass Death. His push to discredit Dr. Fauci who is roughly twice as popular as the president, has gone over like Hitler’s Bar Mitzvah. His proposal to send your kids back to the classrooms in the midst of a growing, lethal pandemic, has the backing of exactly 29% of the American population.
What I am arguing is that this election is all-important for the survival of the republic…but… we must start thinking today about the immediate and mid-term future after Trump loses. We have to broaden our emphasis and our political agenda... now. It’s called preparation.
If you are among those who still doubt Trump’s defeat, then it is your obligation to donate money, yes, to Democrats. And if you have the ability you should think about cooperating with the anti-Trump campaigns in one of the six swing states that will decide the election. What you do in Blue-dyed California or New York or Massachusetts means next to nothing (except for truly contested local races).
To my central point: the sociopath Trump is now a wounded, bleeding animal, feeling increasingly cornered and legitimately paranoid. Nobody is running the government except him, Jared Kushner and the horrid Bill Barr (who just got his shriveled rocks off by executing two federal prisoners).
Trump is doomed but remains dangerous as any cornered predator is. His support now, both at the popular and institutional level , has eroded so quickly that his margin of maneuver is somewhat constrained. Somewhat.
We will, however, enter the real Red Alert Zone is the 60 days between the election and the inauguration of Joe Biden. I categorically reject the fever dream of some on the left that he will stage a coup. That’s an absurd thought because there are no generals, there are no security forces, willing to break with 200 years of democratic rule to save the ass of an unpopular nut case.
The president will, nevertheless, do what he can to ball things up after he loses.
I, therefore, propose we begin today an explicit movement that he RESIGN upon defeat and let Mike Pence conduct the transition. (Yes, I know all about Pence. He’s a dirty dog, but he wants to preserve his political life and acting as a semi normal lame duck for 60 days would do him well, as well as the country).
It’s probably too early in the cycle to make a RESIGN movement public. I, for one, want Trump to stand in the election so he can suffer the humiliation he deserves and so that the 35% of the Planks who have enrolled in his personality cult see what a minority they are.
Behind the scenes, though, among progressives and Democratic and Never Trumpers, we need to start laying the political groundwork so that sometime shortly after Labor Day we make the call that he resign after his loss. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this theme was picked up from the podium at the Democratic Convention? But it won’t be. It’s up to us.
“If you lose, you must resign the next day.” A simple equation and a necessary one.
We also need to know in a much more detailed manner just exactly what the first 10 steps Joe Biden will make, not in his first 100 days, but in his first 10 days. At the current rate, which is spiraling out of control, a hundred days will cost us another 150,000 lives and, likely, many more. It might be much higher. Medical experts predict that within a month from now we will have 100,000 new cases PER DAY. Biden’s platitudes about restoring rule of law and moving forward and looking out for the working poor is are all comforting and mostly empty rhetoric. We need a clear PLAN.
Details, please, Mr. Biden. Details, on how the first thing you will do is to ask the Democratic-controlled Senate to abolish the filibuster on Day One. Those 51 votes will terminate all Republican obstruction. Unless that happens, NOTHING will get through the next Congress.
Then, I want Biden to tell us NOW, I want him to tell the country, what his detailed plan is to get control of Covid-19. Details. I said details. Because up to now I have heard none. Nor has the electorate.
Donald Trump is no longer the greatest threat to our future. Rather, it the Mass Death pandemic he has unleashed that most threatens our lives, those of our children, and – frankly—our viability as functioning democratic society. When he goes, as he will, the mass killer will still be rampaging.
In short. Dump Trump but please start thinking beyond November 3. Do not be distracted by every insane twist and turn he performs every hour. We have rightly excoriated Trump and the administration for not properly preparing for the pandemic when it was clear it was coming.
Just as inevitable as the pandemic was before it actually exploded, we must now adapt to the notion that we are already entering the Post-Trump period and we must look ahead and prepare and not just keep looking backward and bitching. We know he’s an asshole. That’s why he’s a goner. How do we start saving ourselves is the question we face.
I was supposed to be on vacation this week. I am instead, starting tomorrow and unless all hell breaks out I will take a short hiatus until the end of the month. Stay Safe. Prepare. +++
